About the workPersian embroidery with ist detailed figures and landscapes was highly valued in Asia and Europe. One of the most important production centres at the beginning of the 15th century was the royal court of Samarkand in present-day Uzbekistan. This silk blanket dates from the time of Shah Tahmāsp (1524-1576) and depicts a princely hunting party chasing lions, deer and pheasants among cypress trees and flowering branches. It was modelled on motifs from miniature painting, as was common in books and other artworks at the time.
