About the workThis elaborately designed candlestick was originally the stand for a large crucifix, which was likely lost. The object probably comes from a church or monastery in the Lorraine region. Since bronze work was precious in the Middle Ages, a spike was placed where the cross would have been in order to hold a candle. This way, the valuable base could still be used. In addition to Westphalia, the northeastern regions of France were among the centres of bronze casting at this time due to their large ore deposits.
