About the workThe depth effect of this vase is due to the technique of interlayer decoration introduced by Émile Gallé in 1889. In this process, the piece of work was left to cool, and details such as the spider’s web, grasses and herbs were etched onto it. The glass then had to be carefully reheated in order to overlay it with additional layers of glass, which were in turn worked on once they had cooled. With his botanically faithful depictions, Gallé greatly exceeded the traditional European understanding of decorative art and also evoked poetic moods.
