About the workThe noble art of glassmaking can be admired in this piece, but its extravagance can also be criticised. This specimen may have served as a precious novelty glass at banquets. You could prove yourself by drinking from it without spilling anything. Hollow trunks and animal heads were blown out of the vessel after a batch of hot glass had softened the wall in the same place. The glassmaker’s blowing then only affected this hot part, without deforming the rest of the glass, which was somewhat cooler and therefore stiffer.
