About the workFrom the middle of the thirteenth century, glass played a major role in the wealthy households of Central Europe. One of the most popular drinking glasses was the prunted beaker, which was produced in many variations. The particularly fine, completely colourless examples are generally considered to be products of the leading Venetian glassworks. However, they have thus far almost exclusively been found north of the Alps; we therefore cannot rule out the possibility of an independent luxury workshop there, whose heyday was before the plague epidemic in the middle of the fourteenth century. This beaker is believed to be a find from the city of Speyer.
