on display, room G11 About the workLike an Asian lacquer painting, this bowl is so highly decorated that no glass is visible. Among the many art movements of the 1920s, Alexander Pfohl’s glassware represents a dedication to decoration. Pfohl came from Haida in northern Bohemia, where his family was involved in decorating hollow glassware. Between 1911 and 1914 he studied under the designers Koloman Moser and Michael Powolny in Vienna; as head of the design studio at the Josephinenhütte glassworks in Schreiberhau (now Szklarska Poręba) in Silesia from 1919 to 1929, he became a stylistic trendsetter for the region’s glass art.
