About the workEvery year around 11 November, German children parade through the streets with lanterns in remembrance of Saint Martin. In the nineteenth century, they often carried illuminated pumpkins, a custom now usually associated with Halloween. Like other Rhineland artists, Peter Schwingen captured the atmosphere of Saint Martin’s Day in multiple paintings, focusing entirely on the effects produced by the light of the lanterns. Schwingen came from a modest background and was able to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy thanks to a scholarship.
