on display, room GAUL. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workAt the age of 30 Winfred Gaul was among the youngest participants in II .documenta, a major exhibition in Kassel in 1959. There he showed this piece along with two others. His participation was supported by Jean-Pierre Wilhelm and Manfred de la Motte. They represented the artist in their Galerie 22 in Düsseldorf – key address for Art Informel in the young Federal Republic. The work is exemplary of a trend in Gaul’s painting at the time: the colour condenses into nearly square clusters in the centre. In this way, the composition of the picture, as well as the act of its creation, becomes a theme.
