About the workThe heads of a trout, pike and sturgeon emerge from the water; the moment when the water stretches over their heads like a skin is captured here. This item is a unique piece. A surviving design drawing by the glass artist and entrepreneur Emile Gallé provides information about the way it was made. The fish appear less realistic on the vase than in the drawing; the pike in particular literally melts into the surface of the water. Gallé noted on the drawing: “Appearance of water after rain, dirty grey-green.”
