About the workEugène Dücker, a Düsseldorf professor of landscape painting, comes from the Baltic Sea island of Saaremaa, which is now part of Estonia. This biographical connection to the sea is evident in many of his works. In his tranquil coastal paintings people often appear only as marginal figures. In this study of a young woman, Dücker concentrates on the elaboration of details: her posture, the colourful shawl, her braided hair and the filled wicker basket. Her sturdy clothing and the indeterminate background, which resembles a wide sandy beach, suggest a rural maritime context.
