About the workThis elaborately designed item is either a unique piece or from a very small edition. Little is known about the artist who signed it. In the 1860s and 1870s, Eugène Michel worked as a master engraver for the glass merchant Eugène Rousseau in Paris. By the 1890s, he had his own workshop, which is also where this vase was made. Michel joined forces with a glassworks – probably Appert Frères in Clichy – to achieve the atmosphere of a pond with water lilies. The depiction can be interpreted as a representation of particular states of mind.
