Stamp on squared paper

on display, room 037 About the workThis stamped pattern on squared paper could certainly be used as a template for knitting or embroidered needlework. The image touches on two overriding themes in Rosemarie Trockel’s oeuvre: the pattern motif, which represents the process of artistic creation, and the experimentation with textile-based forms of design as a supposedly feminine pursuit. Trockel, who had also studied sociology prior to attending the Werkkunstschulen (Art and Craft Schools) in Cologne in the 1970s, repeatedly addresses gender roles in her works.
