About the workThis beaker poses a mystery. Coming from the art trade, it was allegedly found in Nishapur, Iran, but the heyday of glass production there occurred in the tenth century. This would make this beaker a much earlier forerunner of the prunted beaker, which was in use in Central Europe from the thirteenth century onwards. However, there are no reliably dated comparative examples from the Middle East, and decorative prunts were rare there. In some respects, the cup is so similar to European prunted beakers that European origins cannot be ruled out.
