Small Sail, 1964/65, reconstruction 2006
Chiffon, lead weights, string, fan
About the workThe omnipresent but invisible element of air comes to the fore in this work by New York-based German artist Hans Haacke. Through the interaction of a fan and a sail, a continuous air movement is created, causing the fabric to continually take on new forms. The slightest changes in the room’s drafts influence the motion of the translucent textile. The form of the work is neither predictable nor controllable, and the sheet takes on a living shape.
