About the workThe strong design influence from Arabic countries – a result of close trade relations since the fifteenth century – is noticeable in these book covers. In addition to the gold embossing, the tendril motifs and medallions are reminiscent of Islamic bindings. The small painting depicts a scene from the Greek saga of Pyramus and Thisbe, the lovers of the ancient world who could not be together because of a feud between their parents. In her despair upon finding Pyramus dying, Thisbe stabbed herself to death before her lover’s eyes.
