About the workIn this motif, the painter or painters have taken up a passage from the Bible that states “justice and peace shall kiss”. The picture was completed during the Eighty Years’ War, which also ravaged Antwerp, its presumed place of origin. The work alludes to the hope that the war will end. Allegories – representations of abstract ideas in human form – were popular with wealthy, often aristocratic buyers from the sixteenth century onwards. There are 14 roughly contemporaneous versions of this theme from various Antwerp workshops that are known to exist today.
