not on displayThis painting caused a scandal at the first exhibition; it became known that Adolf Münzer's model - the married Marie Therese Dressen - was his lover. As in this double portrait, he always tried to portray her unrecognisably. The artist showed her once elegantly dressed and once unclothed in an intimate scene. The mirror intensifies the play of showing and concealing, and also makes her appear fourfold. A year after the painting was created, the two married and Münzer was offered a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
