Woman with a Raven on a Precipice, ca. 1804
Woodcut
Image dimensions16,9 × 11,8 cm
Sheet dimensions24,3 × 19,2 cm
About the workIn search of something, the young woman reaches for the branch, which is positioned dangerously close to the unseen abyss. The motif is reminiscent of stories from literature around 1800. Perhaps the image was intended as a book illustration. However, the exact source text is unknown. The print is the result of Caspar David’s collaboration with his brother Johann Christian Friedrich, a carpenter who also worked as a woodcut engraver and produced the printing blocks for a total of four of Caspar David’s woodcuts.
