About the workDuring the era of National Socialism, collecting art that had been officially branded as “degenerate” was dangerous. Had a young Düsseldorf lawyer named Hans Lühdorf not taken the risk, this watercolour might not have survived the turmoil of the period. Lühdorf probably acquired this work in February 1945. The painting was realised by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff in 1913, the year Die Brücke – the artists’ group he co-founded – came to an end. The sparing use of blue and yellow suggests that this woman has crouched down by a stretch of water in front of a low-lying sun.
