About the workBuddha sits on a double pedestal with his eyes lowered in meditation. The bulge of his skull is adorned by a tall flame growing out of a lotus bud, which is a sign of enlightenment and typical of fifteenth-century figures from the Sukhothai region in northern Thailand. The sculpture was originally gilded. In Buddhism, gold represents the founder of the religion – according to tradition, his skin was golden in colour – and is also considered a symbol of truth.
