on display, room 034 About the workThe female body served as the model for this armchair. You sit as if in your mother’s lap, your head nestled between imaginary breasts. The spherical stool, which is attached to the armchair by a cord, is meant to refer to the social bondage of women. The oversized representation of body parts is one of the strategies of Pop Art that was also used in design. The “UP” series comprised seven pieces of furniture; the abbreviation “UP” stands for “uprising”, as the first objects were able to expand independently when exposed to the air thanks to their sponge-like material.
