About the workFrench furniture enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries due to its elegance. This was especially true for chests of drawers, which were derived from chests – as the name suggests – and developed into artistic showpieces. A characteristic feature of an example from this period is the “bombé” – a gentle, central protrusion of the front – as well as the gilded bronze fittings in rocaille form. These shell-like details were typical decorative elements of the French Rococo.
