About the workIn some countries, certain stamps in a passport can cause difficulties when crossing the border. For this installation, Barthélémy Toguo addressed restrictions on freedom of travel. The Cameroonian artist carved key terms from the authorities into the bottom of wooden stamps. His own identity documents inspired him to create these sculptures, as did the general issue of being “labelled” – a feeling that often affects immigrants from countries outside Western Europe. Toguo’s stamps in the form of faceless busts critique the bureaucratic classification of people.
