About the workThe late medieval painter Giotto is said to have been discovered by the great artist Cimabue, who found him as a young shepherd drawing sheep with the simplest of means. This event was recorded by Giorgio Vasari, whose biographies of artists published in the mid-sixteenth century marked the beginning of art historiography. The fact that Ernst Förster chose this subject is also of biographical significance: he in turn was reportedly discovered by Peter Cornelius. Förster came to Düsseldorf with Cornelius, who was head of the art academy there. Later, Förster also became a doctor of art history.
