About the workThis scholar is lost in thought. He points upwards with his index finger. The gesture might indicate the moment of an epiphany, but also the sky, the divine sphere. The gentleman seems to be an “oriental” king: next to him are a turban and a crown. In the book in front of him are building plans. It was therefore assumed that this might be King Solomon, who is said to have built the first Jewish temple in Israel. The picture is attributed to an anonymous artist who signed his works with “I. S.” and mainly painted single figures and genre scenes.
