About the workThis altarpiece was probably produced in the workshop of Marten de Vos, a successful painter in Antwerp. After the conquest of Antwerp by the Spanish in 1585, the previously Protestant city became Catholic again: churches became more ornately decorated and many altars were endowed. The original location of this altar is unknown. The outside shows the annunciation of the birth of Jesus by the angel Gabriel in a modest grey painting. The colourful interior, reserved for feast days, depicts Jesus’ birth, crucifixion and resurrection.
