on display, room 010.2 About the workIn addition to landscapes from the Lower Rhine, Carl Seibels favoured painting animals, whose physique and movement he studied in great detail – as shown in this image. These sometimes unfinished depictions vividly illustrate the challenges of working with animals: unlike people, who are portrayed willingly, animals do not keep still. Seibels studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy for around fourteen years; he had enrolled there at the age of ten. The minimum age at the time was twelve, which is why it is believed that Seibels must have deliberately given a false date of birth.
