About the workJivya Soma Mashe was born into the Warli tribal community in India. According to their beliefs, humans and nature are connected in a mysterious way. Customs, as well as stories about spirits, gods, animals and people, are passed down orally. On festive days, the women of the tribe also record these stories in the form of pictures on the walls of their huts, which are covered with mud and cow dung. In the 1970s, the Indian government sought to protect this traditional art form. Mashe then became the first man to start making and exhibiting artworks featuring Warli narratives.
