About the workThe identity of this gentleman is unknown. His elevated social position is indicated by his wide ruff and expensive leather gloves. The picture has been attributed to the painter Abraham de Vries. The artist, who worked in various cities in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, specialised in finely executed portraits. In general, they have a simple composition and focus entirely on the subject’s face, which de Vries – as is the case here – always rendered with great realism.
