About the workThe painter Reiner Dahlen, who died from a lung condition at a young age, came from a family of artisans – unusual for artists of the time – and only briefly attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Dahlen was praised by his contemporaries for his originality and for the fact that his motifs often had a touch of humour. In 1873, an unknown art critic wrote about this work in the “Frankfurter Journal”: “He stands there as if the spirit of a heron had entered him.” The figure in this picture may be fellow Düsseldorf artist Christian Kröner, who was a successful painter of animals and landscapes.
