About the workThe Düsseldorf painter Johann Peter Hasenclever is considered a precise observer who often added a touch of humour to everyday scenes. In this early self-portrait, however, he was interested in portraying himself as an artist. He confidently staged himself in the style of the Dutch painters of the 17th century, claiming to be their successor. With his clothing and distinctive hat, he places himself in a certain light: the simple black frock coat was worn by men at the time as a political symbol of a national, liberal sentiment.
