About the workAround 1900, the female nude became more popular as a subject in its own right in painting, which was dominated by men. Naked bodies were staged for the (male) viewer – as in this work by Max Slevogt, who directs the viewer’s gaze to a woman whose head he has cropped and whose pale skin he has contrasted against the carpets and curtains. The textiles and slippers indicate his interest in the tales from the Arabian Nights as well as the fashion for so-called “Orientalism”. The popularity of these motifs is also demonstrated by the fact that the picture was acquired for the collection by a citizens’ association two years before the founding of the Düsseldorf museum.
