About the workThe German-Dutch painter Abraham Mignon specialised in still lifes – more specifically, so-called “forest floor” still lifes, in which flowers, fruits and insects are depicted in the open air. Mignon’s works were very popular in the royal courts of Europe and consequently found their way into numerous painting collections. He began his training at the age of nine, when his father placed him in the care of the still-life painter Jacob Marrel. It was in the latter’s studio that Mignon later met Marrel’s stepdaughter, Maria Sibylla Merian, whom he taught to paint. Merian also became an important artist on her own right.

Leo Spik), Berlin, eingeliefert von der Erbengemeinschaft, Erwerber*in unbekannt; [...]; spät. 21.4.1936 Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf; Juni 1936 erworben von der Galerie Paffrath; 2015 restituiert auf Empfehlung der Beratenden Kommission: Verbleib im Museum Kunstpalast (heute Kunstpalast) gegen eine Ausgleichszahlung an die jüdische Erbengemeinschaft nach Ludwig Traube mit Unterstützung der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, des Landes NRW und der Kulturstiftung der Länder
