About the workThis picture may have served as an advertisement for the house of a Dutch merchant named Jonah. The work depicts the pivotal moment in the biblical story of Jonah where he is swallowed by a large fish. After three days in its belly, the prophet’s prayers to God are answered and he is spat out. At that moment, Jonah becomes aware of the power of God. Pieter Lastman ran a successful studio specialising in mythological and religious paintings in Amsterdam. Rembrandt was his most famous pupil.
