About the workJacob Lehnen is one of the Düsseldorf artists who successfully specialised in finely executed still lifes. He usually created detailed paintings in a small format. In this balanced but seemingly random composition, he shows perfectly ripe, early summer fruit: strawberries, cherries and redcurrants bursting with freshness. The Dutch still lifes of the 17th century were an important model for painters of the time. While there the transience of things is often indicated by withered or spoilt objects, in Lehnen's work everything is immaculate and perfectly beautiful.
