on display, room 017 About the workLike this portrait of his wife, several works by the Leipzig-born artist Oskar Zwintscher are dominated by black. Only the face, hands and a few details stand out; the materials can be differentiated by the way they reflect the light. The decorative elements – the cushions and the wall panelling – as well as the strong contrasts, sharp lines and flatness of the image, all correspond to the contemporary style Zwintscher himself influenced. He frequently depicted his wife Adele in various roles – sometimes dreamily in a landscape, as a pageboy, or, like this picture, as an introspective lady.
