About the workToday, Johann Wilhelm Schirmer is not only recognised for his large-format paintings, but also for his studies. At the time they were produced, they were intended for private use, not exhibitions. When Schirmer travelled to Italy in 1839, he was initially interested in the light-flooded landscapes south of Rome. In this work, it seems as if we can follow the artist’s gaze from the closely observed foreground to the background and back again.
