About the workWhen this picture was painted, Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Carl Friedrich Lessing had been friends for over 20 years and had already realised portraits of each other several times. In 1826, they had followed their teacher Wilhelm Schadow from Berlin to Düsseldorf, where they soon became the leading representatives of the so-called Düsseldorf School of Painting. Lessing made a name for himself with historical scenes and landscapes, while Sohn rose to become the most successful portrait artist in the city.
