About the work"Hunting, or actually shooting and riding, are his favourite pastimes" wrote the lawyer and writer Friedrich von Uechtritz about Carl Friedrich Lessing in 1839. In this painting, he depicts himself as a hunter in the Eifel with his Düsseldorf painter colleague Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. In addition to hunting, the two shared a fondness for the detailed depiction of nature. They had founded the Landschaftlicher Componierverein (Landscape Composers' Association) in 1827 specifically for this purpose. During his time in Düsseldorf between 1826 and 1858, Lessing often combined his landscapes with depictions of historical events.
