About the workShimmering flecks of colour and light come together to form the imposing dome of Dresden’s Frauenkirche. Originally from Lübeck, the painter Gotthardt Kuehl did not depict the main view of the church, instead choosing a seemingly random vista from the art academy across the roofs of houses and rear courtyards. Kuehl brought French Impressionism to Dresden at the end of the nineteenth century; the movement emphasised the fleetingness of the moment. As a professor at the local art academy, but also an exhibition organiser and cultural policymaker, he was committed to the modernisation of this city steeped in artistic tradition.
