About the workWithin a short span of time, Carl Blechen – then a professor of landscape painting at the Berlin Academy – produced eight similar versions of this scene. The viewers take on the role of passers-by who come across two women bathing. In this painting from the Düsseldorf collection, Blechen gave the women a calm appearance; they react with surprise rather than alarm. The light application of paint, the dappled light on the forest floor and the soft outlines of the landscape reinforce this peaceful impression.
