About the workSebastiaen Vrancx depicts an event from the Eighty Years’ War, in which the Netherlands won its independence from Spain. Rather than a scene that culminated in one climactic moment, as was common, the artist chose to present a number of individual scenes. Murder, robbery and the division of loot can all be seen. Vrancx did not shy away from portraying brutality, which is why his works have been interpreted as a warning against war. He was one of the earliest Dutch battle painters and was highly regarded in his time; Peter Paul Rubens owned one of his paintings.
