About the workFamous for his religious motifs, the Düsseldorf painter Christian Köhler often depicted women. This scene comes from the Book of Exodus, which is part of the Jewish Torah as well as the Christian Bible. The book describes the deliverance of the Israelites from Egyptian rule. God parts the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to pass safely and drowning the Egyptians. Köhler shows this in the background of the image, but focuses on Miriam, who leads the Hebrew women in a song of praise.
