About the workThe tale of the Magi, who are guided by a star to the newborn Jesus Christ, is one of the best-known Bible stories. Peter Janssen, who was director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy at the time, brought their companions to the fore. They convey the hope of change for the better that the birth of Christ promised. Since the destination of the journey is not depicted, the painting can also represent other longings. In the year it was completed, it was shown in the first exhibition in the newly built Kunstpalast.
