Carl Heinrich Hoff, a painter with close ties to Düsseldorf, designed the procession planned for the 500th anniversary celebrations. He wanted to bring the past into the present with several parades. As the festival records stated, the main group shown here was intended to illustrate the “cultivation of art by Elector Ottheinrich (1556–1559)”. The ruler is depicted in the centre on a grey horse. While he only reigned for three years, he earned himself a place in history by promoting science and the arts.
