About the workIn 1886, an elaborate procession was organised to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg. The painter Carl Heinrich Hoff, who had previously spent some time in Düsseldorf and had been teaching in Karlsruhe since 1878, was commissioned to plan and design the parade. Hoff wanted to present the previous centuries to the public. Here you can see part of the first group, which features children, nuns, monks and bishops. Elector Ruprecht I and his wife Elisabeth of Namur were to follow behind. Ruprecht was the founder of the university that still bears his name today.
