About the workThis scene from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 alludes to the defeat of the French army. The soldiers running away show that Ernest Crofts was on the side of the Germans: desertion was a criminal offence and a social taboo. The English artist came to Düsseldorf to study, married a German woman and settled there as a battle painter. In the 1870s and 1880s, his motifs inspired by open-air painting were very popular, including in England.
