About the workPeter Paul Rubens painted this altarpiece as a commission for the church of Notre-Dame de la Chapelle in Brussels. During this period, the Catholic Church began to build more altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The veneration of Mary was a means of distinguishing themselves from the Reformed churches. The Catholic Elector Johann Wilhelm, who resided in Düsseldorf, bought the painting for his collection in 1711, but without the altar designed by Rubens. With its hall dedicated to Rubens, the Electoral Gallery in Düsseldorf’s city palace attracted many visitors, even when Johann Wilhelm II’s successors were no longer based in Düsseldorf. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the collection was brought to the elector, who was the rightful heir, in Munich. Painted on wooden panels, the “Assumption of Mary” remained in Düsseldorf because it was too large and too heavy to be transported overland.
