About the workGustav Adolf Köttgen presents himself as self-confident and fashionably dressed. He was a politically active member of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and was involved in the workers’ movement. Köttgen organised the first communist meetings in Germany in Elberfeld in 1845. He painted several portraits of his political comrades and copied images of well-known figures from the past, such as Martin Luther.
