About the workIn this small oil painting, the Trier painter Ramboux, who was trained in Paris and Munich, depicts an urban quarter in Cologne in which houses are arranged in an interlocking pattern. With just a few colors and an eye for detail, he succeeds in illustrating the narrowness of the city, but also in depicting the place as a human habitat. The documentary value of the motif is consistent with other activities of his. He worked for a museum collection and was committed to the preservation of historical monuments. He became known as a copyist of over 300 Italian works of art, some of which have been destroyed.
